The world is full of AI rangers doing the same things as you, they buy the same weapons and upgrades from the same shops as you (sometimes right before you were about to), and fight (and loot) the same baddies as you. There are tons of quests and dialog, there is a lot of text to read if you want to get the most out of it.

The main part of the game is flying around trading and fighting, but it has more of an RPG feel, you are pretty much in one ship which you upgrade and don't build any bases or anything. Space Rangers is more accessible, but also more varied. It's a sandbox so there's no real end, you mostly set your own goals. So it gets more complex and managerial the deeper in you go. You aren't just limited to one ship and spend a lot of time in menus remotely ordering ships about and setting up automated delivery and patrol routes. You can set up your own factories for profit or to supply your ships with missiles or energy. The economy has some elements of city builder games when there's a wheat factory, then the wheat has to go a beef factory, which then goes to make burgers, which feed the miners getting ore, to make the thing etc., long production chains with thousands of AI ships ferrying goods around. It has a big universe with multiple factions of AI going about their business trading fighting and engaging in piracy. I've only ever played with a flight stick though. X3 is a first-person flight sim best played with a joystick, although a console controller might do the trick and many people play with mouse. It absolutely requires a commitment to learn and understand, which seems like a super odd thing to say about a video game, but it's super worth it. It is truly hard to explain, but it is still easily one of my favorite space games I have ever played. The game can be slow sometimes, crazy frantic other times. Leading up to it was a lot of piracy, mining, trading, expanding my fleet, automating the piracy/mining/trading, factory building, etc. It took me 30ish hours during that particular playthrough to hit that point. That was ok though as I had automated most of my trade empire and already had new ships being produced and sent directly to my carrier ready for the next fight.
I then took control of my personal docked fighter and joined in on the fight for about 30ish minutes. I was pilotting a carrier into enemy space, targeted a defense space station, launched my bombers to attack and my fighters to cover them and my carrier.

Last I played I was using Litcubes Universe, an overhaul mod for the game (that you really shouldn't bother with until you understand the base game).
